What I Learned

About Bd. of Regents v. Bakke (1978).

Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, this case is about Allan P. Bakke that applied to a bunch of medical schools but was rejected by all of them.  He applied to the University of California, Davis, twice, but after the second time, he decided to sue the school in state court saying that the affirmative action programs were unconstitutional.  This case made a point decision by the Supreme Court that upheld Affirmative Action. Allowing race to be one of the many factors in college admission policies. The court ruled specific racial quotas such as the 16 out of 100 seats set aside for minority students and disadvantaged students, which was deemed impermissible.

While
segregated schools have been outlawed by the Supreme Court and though the court has ordered school districts to make bigger steps to assure integration, they are still asking the legality question of affirmative action programs brought by universities. While people deemed these programs a necessity to make up for past discrimination; other individuals consider this act a violation of the Equal Protection Clause that is stated in the Fourteenth Amendment

 The Boston Bus riots

The Boston bus riots were the outcome of the desegregation of Boston public schools. Public schools in Boston were under court control to desegregate through a system of bussing students. The riots started the day desegregation went into action. Many angered white parents and their kids threw stones, eggs, and even bricks at the busses carrying black students that arrived at the Bosten public schools. In these riots, eight black students riding on the busses were injured.

The masters, segregated country clubs, and Agusta national golf club

The Masters, who first played in 1934, was an all-white golf club that did not allow black individuals to join until 1990. In 1991 it was club policy to not disclose members’ names, and a “black gentleman” was accepted among eight other white men, who also become members of the club that year. It took 60 YEARS, but now the golf club, home of the masters, was desegregated.

White flight

In the 1950s the occurrence “White flight”, was when the population of white people moved to the suburbs, this caused the wealth and funding to travel along with them. This left the cities with empty funding which lead to poverty and increased crime.

Red Lining

Redling was a discriminatory practice where services were rejected from potential customers who lived in a neighborhood that was classified as “hazardous” to invest in. these neighborhoods usually consisted of racial and ethnic minorities. Redling was originally was to prevent financial disaster. This was supposed to create stability in the housing market, so they crossed off specific neighborhoods where loaners were more likely to fail on their loans.
